Introduction

The name Riede originated - as far as we know to-day in Schwaben [Baden - Wuerttemberg] or to be precise, in Hausen im Tal. Our earliest ancestor - Georg - was born in Hausen around 1525. In 1565 he took out a mortgage on a sawmill in Ratshausen and many of his descendants have been, and are still living there to this day.

A distant cousin - who lives in Ratshausen - has researched the Riede family and the results were overwhelming, to say the least. Apart from all this researching he did, he also designed and registered the above Coat of Arms in 1968.

The majority of the Riede's are living in Germany but a great number have spread out to Holland, Canada, Austria, Australia, Switzerland and the U.S.A.

A conservative estimation puts the total number of living Riede's at 1500

Our earliest ancestors

 Georg Riede. Born around 1525. Miller in Ratshausen in 1565.

 

Ratshausen & Plettenberg

 

Jorg Riede. Born in 1565. Married Scholastika Sauter between 1590-1605. Jorg was also a Miller in Ratshausen.

Jacob Riede. Born in 1608. Married Anna Witz in 1629. Jacob married Anna Spitel in 1642 after Anna Witz died at an early age. Jacob was a Miller in Ratshausen.

Martin Riede. Born 23May 1632.

 

The "Hessen" Connection

Martin left Ratshausen and moved to Oberlistingen in the Landkreis Kassel [Hessen] . Here he married Anna Marie ? in around 1685. He was a Miller on the Hohenborn Estate, close to Oberlistingen.

Johannes Riede. Born Mar. 1690. Married Anna Catherina Kaeseberg on 30 Dec. 1712 in Oberlistingen. Anna was born in 1666 and died on 2 Sep. 1742. in Oberlistingen.

Johannes was a carpenter in Hohenborn.

 

 

Johann Wilhelm Riede. Born Apr. 1726. Married Anna Martha Leveringhausen on 6 May 1749 in Altenhasungen - LandkreisKassel. Johann Wilhelm was a Miller in Hohenborn

All these children were born and baptised in Altenhasungen.

At this stage it is unknown what became of Henricus and we will leave him for a future search.

Johannes, Johann Heinrich and Jacob enlisted in the Hessian Army and went to the United States and/or Canada with the British Forces to fight the American Revolutionary Forces in 1776. The British handed over the lands to the American Forces in October 1783. Most of the British, German and Loyalist troops, together with tens of thousands of their families, were transported back to Europe during the Summer of 1783. Johannes, Johann Heinrich and Jacob remained in the New World. Christian also enlisted in the Prussian army of King Frederik [ll] "The Great", of Prussia. Christian was sent to Holland to assist the King's Sister, Wilhelmina of Prussia and her husband stadtholder Willem V of Orange, to quell the uprising of the Patriots in Holland which was started by a hold-up of Wilhelmina near Goejan Verwellensluis in 1787.

Christian managed to survive the "skirmishes" in Holland and stayed behind in Holland to settle on the island Rozenburg, where he married Anna Scheer on 30 Oct. 1791.

Gerrit Riede. Born: 14 Mar. 1799. Rozenburg.

Baptised: 17 Mar. 1799.

Died: 15 Nov. 1884.

Gerrit married Adriaantje van der Vlugt on 3 Jun. 1820. They

had many children: Anna, Christian, Johanna, Reijer, Willem,

Pieter, Neeltje and Ary.

All their children were born on the island Rozenburg.

 

Willem Riede. Born: 25 Feb. 1830.

Died: 17 Mar.1915. in Nieuw Helvoet.

Married Elizabeth van den Ban on 13 May 1853 in Nieuw Helvoet.

Children:

Gerrit, Johannes Adrianus, Cornelis, Willem, Christian and Arie.

All born in Nieuw Helvoet.

 

Johannes Adrianus. Born: 15 May 1857.

Died: 17 Oct. 1941.

Married Willemina Sjouke on 12 May 1882.

Children: Willem, Willemina Elizabeth, Elizabeth, Maartje, Gerrit,

Teunis, Jacobus, Leopold Christian, Theodorus, and Willemina.

 

Teunis Riede. Born: 5 May 1892.

Died: 26 Apr. 1971.

Married Willemina van Vredendaal on 7 Jul. 1920.

Children: Johannes Adrianus, Jacobus, Willemina Louise Maria.

All born in Amsterdam.

 

Jacobus (James) Riede Born: 10 Jun. 1925

Married Ina Jeannette Verwoerd in Amsterdam

On 22 Jul. 1948
